The fire started in the basement of an East 39th Street house and spread to the first floor, Fire Chief Michael Postorino said.

The cause was under investigation, Postorino said.

The fire was knocked down quickly but the cold made it more difficult for the responders, he said.

"Everything freezes when the water hits the ground," the chief told Daily Voice. "Everything is slowed down."
